One of my earliest memories of the theatre is from watching Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat at Blackpool Winter Gardens when I was about five years old. I remember being in awe of the giant pharaohs head and since then it has definitely been one of my favourite musicals.
So when the newest production of this show roared into town in triumphant technicolour this week I was first in the queue! And I am glad to report it does not disappoint!
Joe McElderry absolutely excels as Joseph with his amazing vocal ability culminating in a powerhouse of a performance of 'Close Every Door to Me' one of the best versions of this song I have ever heard.
Trina Hill is superb in the role of the narrator, a role which has a decidedly tricky vocal score which she handles excellently throughout.
Joseph's eleven brothers are an entertaining and likeable bunch whose renditions of the barn dance inspired 'One More Angel in Heaven' and 'Benjamin Calypso' were throughly enjoyable.
The set design although simple (it is essentially a set of stairs on each side of the stage) beautifully frames the action and allows the actors to move over a variety of levels. It also provides a home for the children's choir who are on the stage throughout the show.
Fans of the show will be pleased to know that the costumes are as colourful as ever and of course the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is the star of the show especially in the finale!
For me part of the success of this show is that it feels like an old friend- never straying too far from the original concept, meaning audiences always know what they are going to get.
So if you want a production filled with colourful costumes, pop up sheep, wooden camels, a rock and roll pharaoh, fantastic singers and songs you will definitely know all the words to then you need to see this production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. If it doesn't leave your hands sore from clapping along and your feet hurting from dancing then nothing ever will, and remember Any Dream will do!
